Resolving Parental Concerns

The staff of Southside High School strives to foster a collaborative environment in the school-family partnership to positively impact academic performance and support the teenager’s social and emotional development. At any point in this process parents may have concerns in these areas with regard to their teen. When those concerns arise the parent should contact the person at the building level who is most knowledgeable about the issue(s). It is important to address an issue quickly.

When a parent has a concern, the following procedure should be followed:

A. Most concerns should be addressed at the building level with the teacher. Usually concerns can be resolved through informal inquiry and discussion with the teacher if it involves academics in a given class. This is usually addressed through a phone call, an email, a note or letter, or an informal visit with the teacher.

B. Call or meet with the counselor if it involves a personal or other issue in their realm of expertise. This also can be addressed through a phone call, an email, a note or letter, or an informal visit with the counselor.

C. If the initial inquiry into the matter is not resolved you may follow this procedure for additional help.

1. Within 3 school days of the initial contact to address the issue/concern
you may request to talk or meet with a school level assistant principal.
They will contact you by phone to discuss the concern or request a meeting.

2. If you still have concerns after meeting or talking with the assistant principal,
you may request a meeting with the principal.

3. If the meeting with the principal does not resolve the concern, contact district
personnel either in the area of curriculum or pupil services.

We have an open door policy for assisting parents with concerns for their teen. It is better to make an inquiry yourself rather than listening to someone who is not part of the solution. Please read our school handbook thoroughly in order to fully understand school rules and regulations.

The following list provides specific concerns and who to contact for answers to these questions.
